Our first Song - No Service

This documentary was filmed in German. It tells the story of five friends who decided to start a band. It shows how their first song, “Bears My Name,” came to be and how they performed it live for the first time — a brief journey through the beginnings of their music.

For this documentary about No Service, a band formed by friends of mine—Vince, Sammy, Elmex, Luca, and Noah — I started by spending time with them during one of their jam sessions. Before we began filming, we had a chance to talk and ease into the process, which helped set a relaxed tone for the shoot. Capturing their raw, unpolished sound during that session provided an authentic introduction to who they are as musicians, and it gave me valuable material for the foundation of the story I wanted to tell.

A few weeks later, I met up with the band again for an in-depth interview. I spoke with them both individually and as a group, which offered a range of perspectives on their creative process. That same day, they performed live, playing several songs—including, for the first time, the one they had composed themselves. Filming this performance felt significant, as it marked a turning point for the band and added an energetic, emotional layer to the documentary.

A few day later, I joined them at Noah’s apartment, an old space that doubles as their recording studio. There, I documented how they recorded their first original song, each member laying down their part separately before bringing it all together. Across these varied shoot days — different locations, scenarios, and moments — I worked to build a cohesive narrative. Though my initial plan was to focus on their album, it became clear after the interview that their first song was the true story. Shifting focus was a challenge, but in the end, it allowed me to capture a meaningful chapter in No Service’s journey.
